New Memoir — 2026

Caribbean Son,
American Mayor
How a Dominican Kid Became an American Mayor

He sat in class for three days without answering to his name — because in America, they called him Robert.
He didn’t know it yet, but that name would one day belong to a mayor.

The story doesn’t end where they said it would.

Beginnings Don’t Have to Predict Endings

Caribbean Son, American Mayor follows Robert Uribe’s life from a childhood of paper boats and vitilla games in the Dominican Republic, through the raw streets of 1990s Dyckman in upper Manhattan, where crack vials glittered in hallways and basketball courts became sanctuaries, to the quiet revelation of the Arizona desert, where a landscaper became a coach, a coach became an entrepreneur, and a café owner became the youngest mayor in his city’s history.

Part immigration story, part coming-of-age, part civic awakening. This memoir traces how a boy who once sat silent in class because he didn’t recognize his own name in English grew into a leader who spoke for an entire border community on the national stage.
